Dear America,

I respect your right to bear arms. I understand that your union was forged in war and rebellion.  That you would not be the nation you are today if it weren’t for the general populace arming themselves and rising up in unison to fight against tyranny.

Plato and Aristotle define a tyrant as, “one who rules without law, looks to his own advantage rather than that of his subjects, and uses extreme and cruel tactics—against his own people as well as others

I’d like to point out of few things:

10 years ago, with the passing of the  Homeland Security Act, your constitution was legally dismantled and for all intents and purposes dissolved;

In order to travel both into and within your nation, your innocent citizens and foreign guests are forced to subject themselves to cancer causing radation;

Your commander in chief weekly orders the murder of innocents by remote control.  Innocents who have not been given trial, nor in most cases even been charged with a crime;

Your overall health peaked decades ago, is steadily dropping and becoming a laughing point amonst the other first world countries while the amount you pay for your alledged health-care is threatening to bankrupt you;

Today, the mere accusation of being a terrorist is enough to strip you of the right to habeas corpus;

In the last 10 years, the banks and wall street have systematically wiped out more of your wealth than it cost to defeat the nazis in WWII and yet there have been no major arrests made for this;

You are now, and have been for some time, living under Tyranny.

Why haven’t you used your 2nd ammendment rights yet and risen up en masse to defend this liberty you speak so fondly of?

If easy access to weapons of mass murder by deranged individuals is the price you have to pay to never live in tyranny, so be it.

However, since it seems so obvious that you’ve completely and utterly failed to use your 2nd ammendment rights for what they were intended for, then I believe it is time that they be forfeited.

Tongue Tied

You know that feelingtongue you get when you’re trying to think of a word to use, but it’s just on the tip of your tongue?  There is no English word for that feeling.  My guess is that the only people who have a need for such a word are people who have problems remembering words to begin with.

I theorize that many words have been created over history for this feeling, and then subsequently forgotten by their creators, as the only people who need to use this word are people who are having problems remembering words.
This is an etymological black hole.  A place that you only need to find after you are already lost.

Apologies to John Adams

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.”

– John Adams US diplomat and politician (1735-1826)

I wonder what Mr. Adams would think about this quote knowing that the continuation of it would resemble …

and their children would then avail themselves to the practice of throwing birds at pigs, and ruminating upon the mating rituals of Kardashians”

Blue Shift Hypothesis for Obesity, Cancer and other Chronic Diseases

The following is a work in progress where I’m refining my thoughts and collecting evidence.  Constructive comments are welcome

I am in no way a medical practitioner or researcher.  Most of the following is speculation based upon my limited understanding of basic cellular biology and my work for one of the major lighting corporations.

Nothing I have written is to be taken as a prescription or even advice to base your life upon without consulting with your medical doctor…. Unless I’m right, in which case I want wealth and accolades… bitches.

Executive Summary:

Obesity and other Chronic Diseases (cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, depression etc.) are multi-factorial in nature but one of the key underlying causes is mitochondrial dysfunction.  I am not proposing a singular root cause for all of these diseases, but an additional contributing factor which combined with other industrial environmental insults has created populations of humans who are not living at their optimal health potential.

I intend to prove that the obesity epidemic has been influenced by the switch from incandescent light sources to the more prevalent Fluorescent lamps now fairly ubiquitous in our homes and workplaces.

The biological mechanism which would facilitate this is the activation of the enzyme “Cytochrome C Oxidase” by Red and Near Infrared light (NIR), and its inhibition by blue light.

Cytochrome C Oxidase is an enzyme in the mitochondria of cells (the cell powerhouses which convert food into energy).  When exposed to NIR light COC is activated and more energy is produced.

Incandescent lights produce the majority of their output in the Red and NIR end of the spectrum – activating the COC, whereas modern Fluorsecent lamps produce very little red and NIR light and more blue light.  This blue shift tricks your body into thinking that its winter and that it should conserve energy for later.

Add: Cytochrome is responsible for cell apoptosis, the self destruction of a cell. This is how the mitochondria kills its host cell if it detects something is wrong. Typically this is due to an energy deficit. If you are feeding food in one end of the ETC, but too much blue light is shutting down the end part of the chain you will end up with too much ROS (reactive oxygen species) leading to free radical damage.

Add: O6 oils destabilize the lipid membrane and are more susceptible to perioxidation due to free radical release at the ETC.

Add: many epidemiological studies look at vitamin D and it’s positive impact on many health markers (add references here). although Vit D itself could be causative in these cases, I also feel that it could be a marker for increased natural sunlight, and that many studies have misplaced the cause of their results.

Summary: avoid vegetable oils and get much more natural sunlight.

Lessons Learned

Well, here I am, 42 years old and still learning stuff that I should have gotten down pat 25 years ago:

#1:  Don’t mix your drinks

#2: Puke in the toilet, not the sink

#3:  Chew your food.

Dear Restaurateurs of the world:

The following are reasons that people come to your establishment and give unto you the results of their labours in exchange for sustenance:
1) Patrons are too busy or too lazy to cook food for themselves at home
2) Patrons are too lazy to clean up after cooking their own meal at home.
3) Patrons are too busy and/or lazy to shop for the ingredients to cook their own meals at home.
4) Patrons are closer to your establishment than to their own home.
5) Patrons are unskilled enough to cook the type of food that you provide.
6) Your establishment has something special (Ambiance) that they can’t get at home.
Nowhere on this list is the lack of a 3 1/2 foot pepper grinder a deciding factor as to whether to patronize your establishment or not.  Never, in my entire culinary history, have I been sitting at home, staring at all the necessary ingredients, a willing and able chef at my side, and a scullery boy on call, and thought to myself:  “Gee, I’d like to create a unique culinary experience at my own home, but I just can’t be bothered to grind my own pepper, from this itty bitty pathetic 5″ grinder… Let’s go out somewhere, where we can have our pepper ground for us, from a pepper grinder the size of my leg”
Please do the world a favour and fire the ‘Pepper Grinder’, and replace them with pepper grinders on each table.  Take the money you save from their salary and hire a bathroom cleaner on a more regular basis…

Red Light, Green Light

Bananas are almost the perfect fruit, as they are colour coded to tell you if they’re ready to eat:  Green, Yellow, Brown.  However, I think that with a little genetic manipulation they could be even better:  Bananas need to be re-engineered so that their colour code is more in line with our traffic lights.  Yellow:  almost ripe,   Green:  Ripe.   Red/Brown:  Stop – no good any more.  Screw world hunger…. the person who solves this should get a nobel prize.
